Modern families are constantly evolving. New family structures are formed as couples divorce or separate, managing the impact this has upon the wider family, children in particular, can be demanding. Family Change will support families across South Lanarkshire through major transitional periods. Family Support Partnership will deliver a total of three new intensive services, complimenting our existing mediation and counselling work.

Family Change services are subject to Fairer Scotland funding and are therefore not available in all areas of South Lanarkshire. To check if you or your client are eligible for any of our new services please use our postcode checker. If it states that your postcode has not been found you are unfortunately ineligible to access the Family Change services.

Time to Talk - Child Counselling
Staffed by fully qualified child counsellors, Time to Talk is a child counselling service specifically aimed at children aged 5-11yrs who are going through family change, such as the separation/divorce of their parents or the introduction of a new partner. Counselling allows the child to better understand their situation, helps them cope with their emotions and enables them to make positive choices. Ultimately, Time to Talk helps children feel more safe, secure and happy in the family home. Our counsellors bring a wealth of techniques to promote emotional health, such as art and play therapy.

Parenting Apart - Post Separation Sessions
60% of married couples have at least one dependent child, however more than 40% of marriages are likely to end in divorce. Nearly 50% of children in Scotland are born to unmarried parents, within 5 years of the birth of a child 52% of those co-habiting have split up. More than 1 in 4 children are likely to experience divorce or separation by the age of 16. Our Parenting Apart sessions aim to help families cope with the life long process of divorce/separation and the many changes involved. Parenting Apart sessions allow parents to better understand how their separation will impact upon their children and how they can better manage contact with their children post-separation. Parents can come to sessions alone or as a couple.

Couple Care – Relationship Counselling for Parents
While conflict is a normal part of family life, friction between parents can be a symptom of a struggling relationship and can have a detrimental effect upon the children. We now provide relationship counselling sessions specifically targeted at parents of vulnerable children in order to promote safer, more positive family environments. Research has shown that a healthy relationship between parents has a positive impact upon children’s health and performance in school, particularly when children are undergoing a transitional period. Moreover, Couple Care ensures that parents are happier about their relationship with their partner. Couple Care compliments our Time to Talk service, ensuring support is given to both children and parents where necessary. Couple Care is delivered jointly by Scottish Marriage Care and Relate Lanarkshire’s diploma level counsellors.

Third Sector Forums are a place for people to network, learn, debate and discuss third sector issues. Categories include funding, fundraising, governance, legal issues, internet, marketing, campaigns, social enterprise and more. While the forums are third sector focused, private and public professionals are welcome too. The forums are completely free to use and run by volunteers.

COSCA’s Counselling Skills Certificate starts on 15th October 2008 with Scottish Marriage Care. The course will be held within The Relationship Centre, Glasgow.

The course is an excellent starting point for anyone interested in enhancing personal and professional relationships or in the use of counselling skills in the workplace. It’s also the perfect first step for anyone interested in training as a counsellor. Learning more about counselling skills will:

Enhance communication and people skills
Support work relationships
Assist effective listening
Develop self-awareness and reflection
